Some History

Te Pito o te Henua was the vernacular name given by the ancestors of the current inhabitants to this beautiful land. Its meaning is based on the idea of being the spiritual core of Polynesia, literally "the Navel of the World", its own world, the Polynesian one.

  • It's believes that the first inhabitants came to Rapa Nui around the sixth century, on board of two catamarans led by Ariki Hotu Matu'a and his sister Ariki Vi'eAva Rei Púa, following the directions given by the royal council Haumaka.
  • For the Western world, Rapa Nui was discovered by the Dutch Jacob Roggenberg in 1722, who tells us that his first impression, from his ship, was that this was land of giants, after taking the Moai for people. Roggenberg described the islanders as delicate people, with beautiful women and kind men.
